On a cool afternoon on March 1st, 2023 your Sheriff was out riding his fat bike on a remote trail in Garrett County Maryland not far from his home. On a short quick descent towards the end of his two hour ride his rear break went out, he grabbed the front brake and over he went! Thankfully he was using his Strava Beacon as he usually does when out riding alone. Mrs. Sheriff was tracking him on her phone while she was out hiking with their daughter at a nearby state park. She noticed he wasn't moving on the app, just a squiggly line appeared. She tried to text and crickets, she then tried to call, he answered but made no sense. She said he was slurring and seemed confused so off they went to find him. Long story short- they found him about a mile up the trail. 911 had been called while they were in route. Because the trail was so remote they had to call Trooper 5 up from Cumberland. The team extracted him out and the Sheriff was flown to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown WV where he spent a week with a fractured neck, back, left elbow, ribs and six contusions on the brain.
